Whenever I read the US or Israel wanting to free Iran from it's "horrible regime", remember this incident plus the hospitals targeted during their attack.

Israel has 0 interest in freeing Iran from its regime, and that's not the point of this war. This thing about which country is more moral is getting tiring. It'd be the same even if only military targets were struck, we're fighting a foreign war for a fake reason, and Israel got us into it.

> Israel has 0 interest in freeing Iran from its regime, and that's not the point of this war.

Israel for very obvious reasons[0] has plenty of interest in freeing Iran from its regime as well as an interest in weakening the regime.

They want it weakened, that's it. Nobody is putting a replacement in, not even the exiled shah's family. Trump is just barely pretending he wants regime change there while also making dubious WMD claims.

More importantly, if Israel wants something, it's not our job.

> They want it weakened, that's it.

They certainly want it gone, weakened is the fallback.

> Nobody is putting a replacement in, not even the exiled shah's family.

What Israel and the US ultimately want is not the same thing as what they will currently put resources behind achieving.

> while also making dubious WMD claims

What is dubious about the WMD claims? Even the IAEA has said Iran has not been complying with safeguards.[0] It's quite obvious based on their enrichment percentages that they have a nuclear weapons program.

> More importantly, if Israel wants something, it's not our job.

Both Israel and the US want the regime gone or at least weakened. Sure, US/Israeli interests aren't always fully aligned but they are often similar. The Iranian regime is probably only an existential threat to Israel in the near term but that doesn't mean the regime is not still a threat to US regional interests. The world shouldn't allow terrorist organizations like the IRGC to obtain nukes.

What's dubious about the WMD claims, Trump keeps waffling back and forth on whether or not we've destroyed their nuclear capabilities.

And this is Israel's interest only. Just because we've also gotten tangled up with UAE, Jordan, etc as a result of catering to their interests doesn't make it our own. Netanyahu called Trump and forced his hand on this, administration admitted it. It's either that or, at best, Trump wanting to manipulate oil markets.

> The world shouldn't allow terrorist organizations like the IRGC to obtain nukes.

It's just us. Our NATO allies don't want this war, even though they're more exposed to Mid East oil. What really shows that we're suckers, our adversaries like Russia and China don't care to get involved either, and they're even closer. They must be happy we're focusing so hard on the Mid East at the expense of say Ukraine.

> What's dubious about the WMD claims, Trump keeps waffling back and forth on whether or not we've destroyed their nuclear capabilities.

Well that's different from whether or not they have a nuclear weapons program, and I think one would probably describe their nuclear weapons program as being damaged but not fully destroyed. I don't think the existence of the nuclear weapons program is reasonably in question however.

> And this is Israel's interest only. Just because we've also gotten tangled up with UAE, Jordan, etc as a result of catering to their interests doesn't make it our own.

Saudi Arabia also wanted the US to attack Iran.[0] Most middle eastern countries seem to consider Iran to be a serious threat.

> Netanyahu called Trump and forced his hand on this, administration admitted it.

It's not super clear what happened here, my interpretation was more that Netanyahu may have somewhat forced Trump's hand on the specific timing of the initial strikes but not really on the decision to attack itself. Hard to say though.

> It's either that or, at best, Trump wanting to manipulate oil markets.

I think what happened is Trump got a bit over confident from the relatively successful Maduro abduction.

> It's just us. Our NATO allies don't want this war, even though they're more exposed to Mid East oil.

I'm pretty sure our NATO allies don't want Iran getting nukes either, it seems the disagreement is mostly in regards to how to prevent that.

> What really shows that we're suckers, our adversaries like Russia and China don't care to get involved either, and they're even closer.

Russia is already clearly involved...on Iran's side. China like usual tends to just play all sides.

> They must be happy we're focusing so hard on the Mid East at the expense of say Ukraine.

Yeah, the US should be doing a lot more to help Ukraine, although at least one of Russia's key allies(Iran) has been degraded a good bit.

And remember how Iran slaughtered tens of thousands of its own citizens a few weeks prior. And the continual killing of Iranian citizens having differing political options of the regime.

War is never pretty or perfect. Winning a war comes with great cost

Killing civilians and destroying infrastructure in the name of saving oppressed people; it's quite impressive such low-effort imperialist propaganda still works after Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya.

> And remember how Iran slaughtered tens of thousands of its own citizens a few weeks prior. And the continual killing of Iranian citizens having differing political options of the regime

So, that's over, then? We changed the regime and now things are better?

The purpose of starting a war is to extract concessions from the other side that you were unable to get through diplomacy, not to kill a lot of people because you think they deserve it. So far Iran has not been willing to make any concessions that it wasn't willing to make before the start of the war, and has shown that it can disrupt Gulf oil exports, which it didn't do prior to the US starting the war. Nothing has been achieved besides pointless bloodshed.

Iran was attack as it was making concessions.

> And remember how Iran slaughtered tens of thousands of its own citizens a few weeks prior.

Yes? How is that a reason to kill even more Iranians, especially schoolgirls?

You talk about it as if America cared one bit about those citizens. This war just made the regime stronger.

If America succeeded, it would change the head, steal oil and keep the regime there to keep control on locals. Like in Venezuela. Maybe committing few atrocities on top of it.

But also of course, it would then invade Cuba and Greenland and god knows who.

Yes nothing says we care about you and your citizens then destroying a little girls school. Really helps enforce the message of love and peace.

Eh, as much as I might dislike the government of my country, I think I believe I would hate a lot more the country that decided it was a good idea to blow schoolgirls from my country into minced meat.

> Winning a war comes with great cost

Invading a country and wanting to steal their resources at any cost, a cost as large as needed, is a crime against humanity.

The USA is not defending itself, it is just trying to control Irans oil to increase the power of American economic elites. Billionaires want more power, children, women and men die indiscriminately because of that.

And, you are totally right. Billionaires does not care that winning a war comes with great cost, because the cost is for USA service men and for all Iranians.

The US governments Nvidia ban on China just pissed them off and China said watch me.

Good on China and their sovereignty. Using mostly their own hardware to get to where they are today.

They gave the slickest fattest middle finger when they released a major model, so much the US is itching to find new ways to stop them.

Especially those pesky Chinese they undermine everything we've invested, won't anyone think of our investors billions?

Regulation right! now! except for freedom lovin' democracy leading countries like the US. Teehee

Dare they release an open model ever again. Didnt you hear? Someone used AI to create a bio reactor drone NUCLEAR fart machine. We must stop fart terrorism.

As much as I detest ACR this seems more plausible than screenshots but I wouldn't trust LG regardless.

Audio is much easier to fingerprint and match against content.

Donald duck lies every other minute, especially on Fridays it seems. Fog is a tactic of war and a way to make money I guess.

Is there any evidence of this

Well it is known SSL termination servers are a popular target: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/10/new-docs-show-ns...

The reputational damage for CF would be intense.

Businesses won't tolerate something like this so I find it hard to believe there is any cooperation between the two entities.

They already terminate TLS at their edge. It takes one secret court order for them to start sending data to the NSA.

Maybe that's why the keep hosting extremist content.

I thought Cloudflare generally refuses to serve those kinds of sites. What content is Cloudflare serving that is extremist?

Many torrent sites, that's a kind of extremism.

I have seen this argument on HN before with respect to similar scenarios involving so-called "tech" companies acting as intermediaries

I don't think it's convincing

If this submission and this thread are any indication, it appears the "reputation" that CF customers care about has nothing to do with privacy. It relates to price, ease of use, reliability, etc.

The fact is businesses do "tolerate it"

For example,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloudbleed

The MITM design of CF is what it is

It creates risks, but these risks are tolerated

If the design, e.g., TLS termination by a third party such as CF, allows for spying, then waiting for evidence of spying is not a good strategy to avoid spying

For example, if evidence becomes available that someone (besides CF) is spying on CF's customers,^1 then for those customers it's too late. For the network traffic that flowed through CF before the evidence became available, any privacy, secrecy or confidentiality has been lost

The damage of being spied upon, if there is any, is already done

1. It's not clear why commenters are only concerned about intelligence agencies

They don't have Cloudflare Tunnels which is almost too good to pass up.

I don't particularly understand how CF makes money on it, with the many high traffic sites I have used that I know don't pay CF a dime. Tunnels adds so much more overhead in compute on both ends more than their normal CDN/proxy would.

big corps = big money. they dont make money from your $5/mth static site, its practically free when you're at CF scale

What I was talking about: https://newtrackon.com/

10+ BT trackers using CF likely free tier. Low-end EACH 300-500 MILLION HTTP requests/24hr uncached, some exceed a billion reqs/day (using statistics from other open trackers) 20TB-40TB daily, ~1-3 Gbps sustained.

That's a crap load of transfer and compute to process those tiny network connections. As someone that's run a Tunnel on a normal site in the millions, the daemon uses a sizeable amount of CPU and I can't see any reason why it's not the same on the other end.

Whatever source CF has going on, kudos to them and their engineering team.

Lots of people will run http over the tunnel rather than https, so that actually comes out cheaper for CF overall because they don't have to start new TLS sessions.

You don't pay with money, you pay with the curses^H^H^H^H^H MITM.

If you're not paying, you're not the customer; you're the product.

So how do we stop this? Laws? Who do we write to?

"Samba unites TV, digital, and behavioral data through AI to power faster, more accurate media decisions. We help the world’s leading brands and agencies reach the right audiences, measure real outcomes, and access signals no one else has."

Kill it with fire.

Such a pity the name is associated with freeing proprietary software.

The _real_ samba: https://www.samba.org/

Yeah...what the hell even is that "I like that name, mine now" for something that has been around almost as long as I have.

Congratulations but I also dislike this type of comment because that is not a solution, a workaround that doesn't happen for 99% of the population.

Soon you won't be able to IoT network or block these devices as they begin to partner with Amazon and the likes that sell Internet for near-by IoT devices. Then your only option then is physically removing / de soldering radios from the board.

Laws needed, like yesterday.

For now, setting up an IoT network is pretty much best practice, and I'd wager the average Hacker News reader both has the necessary equipment and skills to do it. That may not always be the case.

Assuming they install some 5G modem in the device, which is pretty much dirt cheap these days (our local water utility uses 5G for meter readings, and the cost per meter is something like $1/year), there's literally nothing short of a faraday cage you can do.

The can report on what you watch freely, and only consumer laws can stop them. However, without a wifi connection they can't snoop on your local network, and they probably can't connect the data to you, assuming you don't register the TV for those 3 months of added warranty or whatever they try to get you to register.

I tend to avoid devices that are built to snoop on you, so no Amazon Alexa, no Google Home, no Apple HomePod. Everything I have utilizes local control via Home Assistant, and most of it is actively blocked in the firewall from accessing the internet. It's not hard to implement, and doesn't require a master of IT, but it does remove a lot of the convenience, which I guess is the reason people don't do it.
